Dominique, skipper in Black River for over 35 yearsThesearunsinthefamily
Dominique was fourteen the first time he went fishing offshore. He has hardly left the boat since: more than thirty-five years of reading the sea, following dolphins, watching for whale blows and learning every drop-off on the reef.
FreeDom is his boat, and something of a home. You step aboard as a guest and leave as a friend: with a catch to talk about, a phone full of photos and a few of Dominique’s stories, because he always has one.
In the de Baize family, the sea is shared. The next generation already holds the rod.

Frequently asked questions about boat trips in MauritiusYour questions
Where do the boat trips leave from?
From Black River (Rivière Noire), on the west coast of Mauritius, right next to Tamarin. The exact meeting point is sent to you on WhatsApp when you book.
Can Dominique pick us up?
Dominique can come to you: tell him where you are staying when you book, and he’ll arrange the meeting point with you.
Can you swim with dolphins in Mauritius?
Yes, early in the morning and in small numbers: Mauritian law allows three swimmers at a time at most, without touching the dolphins. They are wild animals, so an encounter is never guaranteed, but Tamarin Bay is one of their favourite spots.
When can you see whales in Mauritius?
Humpback whales pass along the west coast from about July to October, to give birth. Sperm whales are here all year round. You watch them from the boat: swimming with whales is forbidden in Mauritius.
Are the trips private?
Yes. One group on board, up to 6 people (4 anglers for deep-sea fishing). The price shown is for the whole boat, not per person.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, plenty of families come aboard: from 6 and 8 year olds swimming with dolphins to teenagers landing their first tuna, the Google reviews say it better than we can.
Do I need fishing experience for deep-sea fishing?
No. Dominique shows you everything, from trolling to popping. Beginners and seasoned anglers are equally welcome.
How much does a boat trip cost?
From Rs 5,500 for the sunset cruise to Rs 24,000 for a full day of deep-sea fishing, for the whole boat. The FreeDom day, with the barbecue on Île aux Bénitiers, is Rs 18,000.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, water and a windbreaker for the ride back. And room on your phone for the photos.
What if the weather is bad?
Safety comes first: if the sea isn’t right, we don’t go out. Dominique lets you know and offers another date.
How do I book?
On WhatsApp at +230 5728 3898: tell him the trip, the date and how many you are. Dominique replies to confirm.
