Dolphin tour in Tamarin and Black River

Swim with dolphins in Black River and Tamarin, Mauritius

Every morning, dolphins come in to rest in Tamarin Bay, a few minutes by boat from Black River. Dominique has known them for more than thirty-five years: he knows where to find them, how to approach without disturbing them, and when the sea is right for getting in the water with them.

How the morning goes

  1. 1

    Leave Black River around 7am

Meet in Black River (Rivière Noire), on the west coast. The exact meeting point is sent to you on WhatsApp, and Dominique can arrange to pick you up.

  2. 2

    Out to Tamarin Bay

The bay is one of the dolphins’ favourite spots in Mauritius. The boat approaches from the side, slowly, and never cuts through the pod.

  3. 3

    Swimming with the dolphins

When the sea and the dolphins allow, you get in the water, three swimmers at most at a time, never touching them. Otherwise, you watch them from the boat.

  4. 4

    Snorkelling along the reef

Mask and snorkel on the reef, among the lagoon fish, before heading back to Black River.

Which dolphins can you see in Mauritius?

On the west coast, you mostly meet two species: the bottlenose dolphin and the spinner dolphin, the one that spins as it leaps. They hunt offshore at night and come into the bays in the morning to rest.

They are wild animals, so an encounter is never guaranteed, but Tamarin Bay is one of the places where you see them most often.

A private boat trip, away from the crowded boats

Aboard FreeDom, it’s just your group, up to 6 people. No race between boats to get closer: Dominique takes his time, picks the right moment, and the dolphins stay relaxed. That is also what makes the swim possible.

The rules, for the dolphins’ sake

In Mauritius, dolphin watching is regulated by law: the boat approaches from the side and stays at least 50 metres away, swimming early in the morning only and three swimmers at most. Aboard FreeDom, these rules are part of the trip.
