Whale watching in Mauritius

Whale watching in Mauritius, off Black River

From July to October, humpback whales travel up from Antarctica to give birth in the warm waters of Mauritius, and the west coast has a front-row seat. Sperm whales live offshore all year round. Dominique has been watching for their blows for more than thirty-five years.

When is whale season in Mauritius?

Humpback whales pass from about July to October, mothers with their calves. Sperm whales are here all year round, off the west coast.

Outside humpback season, the trip is still a beautiful one: sperm whales possible, dolphins often, seabirds offshore and Le Morne on the horizon.

Watching without disturbing

Mauritian law sets a distance of 100 metres from whales and forbids swimming with them. Dominique has always followed these rules: “Respect our sea” is his motto. The whales stay relaxed, and that is when they show themselves best.
